A residential home with Premier Metal standing seam roofing

Helping you with commonly asked questions about metal roofing and siding..

Q: What are dissimilar metals and materials?

A: Dissimilar metals are when two different kinds of metal are in contact with each other. When dissimilar metals become wet, the one causes the other to corrode which will ruin your metal roofing or siding

Q: What are some dissimilar metals and materials?

A: Two of the most common ones are copper and lead. These two especially should be kept away from our metal products. Even by having one in close proximity of the other will cause problems. For example, water splashing into a copper gutter will cause corrosion on the metal roof since the back splash hits the metal roof.

Some more examples are:

• Copper lightning rods (Instead use aluminum lightning rods.)
• Copper coils are found inside air conditioning units (The water from the unit needs to be drained by pumping the water off the roof through PVC pipe.)
• Lead pipe flashings (Use EPDM dektites)

When dissimilar materials need to be used, be careful that they will not get wet and that a barrier sheet separates them.

Q: Is treated lumber or wet mortar considered dissimilar material??

A: Yes. They will cause corrosion of our galvalume products.

Q: How should I remove graffiti from your metal products?

A: It is best to try soap and water first and then solvents. If none of these work, it may be necessary to touchup, repaint, or replace. Visit our Cleaning | Maintenance page for more instructions.
